Population Ageing
Consequent upon the continuing fertility decline and gain in life
expectancy, the Malaysian population is ageing rapidly. Malaysia will become
an ageing nation in 2030 when 15% of the population will be aged 60 and
over. In 2010, two districts and 98 mukim were already classified as having an
aging population. and this number has probably increased to about 12 and
more than 200 respectively in 2019. Out-migration of the youths has
exacerbated population ageing in the less developed areas. Geographic
information on the distribution of the older people and their profiles is crucial
for the provision of goods and services as well as public amenities to those in
need. There is also a need to provide older people the opportunities for them
to continue their active engagement in the society.
